I’m Baaaaaack

Return of the…

Great. Now I got that terrible song stuck in my head. You know the one. A lot of people love it, and for a long time, you couldn’t escape it on the radio. I’d also bet that any “old school” mix at wedding, family reunion, or dance party would feature it to an enthusiastic crowd who would flood the dance floor. You know the song. Fine. Here.

Questionable 90’s one-hit wonders aside, the point is I’m back from my digital detox. It was mostly successful. I stayed off social media all month and checked email only a few times. I couldn’t completely unplug as I am in the midst of a major career transition that demanded confirming fall indie teaching gigs and coordinating with HR at the former day-job.

Oh, I also wrote a guest blog for Blue Sage Boutique and slid onto YouTube to see the JWST images drop.

Other than that though? Mission accomplished. I feel refreshed and refocused. I feel ready to make the most of the remainder of this year, and I hope you are, too.

You already know there’s opportunities to write with me, including a brand new offering on my Patreon, “A Writer’s World,” and your girl got new books hitting the scene, too!

The time away gave plenty to think about in terms of my relationship to social media and digital demands overall, but I feel confident that I’ll find that perfect balance going forward.

I missed y’all and am glad to be back!

Two Day Workshop: Exploring the Shadows

Join me for a two-session workshop on writing tricky, complex, flawed, beautiful, unreliable, inspiring, disgusting, terrible, inspiring characters that create and sustain dramatic tension. Register with ROOTS WOUNDS WORDS.

Messy characters are complicated characters, and in order to write the characters readers hate to love, or love to hate, we have to bring these compelling, sometimes cringey, characters alive on the page. In this two-part, generative workshop, we will boldly explore the complex inner-world of messy, morally-gray characters. Using discussions, writing prompts, and small group exercises, writers will take a deep dive into their problematic, flawed characters to discover how their desires, deeds, and backstory can inform plot, theme, and narrative structure.
