Summer Classes, Workshops, Appearances and Retreats

This summer is primarily devoted to all this new hotness I got going on, this website, my patreon, and my publishing company, but I’m also making time to do a few things out in my community. Here’s a summary of my upcoming events, including a memoir class especially for Black women and women of color writers, webinars with Free Expressions, and retreat and conference appearances.

Hope to see you at something soon!

In this course, we explore memory, voice, and self to craft compelling memoir. Through selected readings, discussion, and writing prompts inspired by the intersection of memory and storytelling, we will acknowledge and work through the inherent challenges of writing memoir--trusting our memory, trusting our voice, and trusting the story.

More opportunities to work with me…

You can also join me for a Writing Success webinar with my friend Lorin Oberweger and Free Expressions. These one-night only (one night only! one night only! Don’t act like y’all aint’t singing that Jennifer Hudson) webinars are open to all writers of every level.

JUNE 24, 2021: I WANT WHAT I WANT WITH SHEREE L. GREER

Desire is the driving force of story. Exploring what our characters want is the first step in building dramatic tension that compels readers to turn the page. Whether the desire is concrete--like a new lover or better job, or abstract--like redemption or revenge, the act of wanting something or someone inspires decisions and provokes action.  Writers will learn techniques and participate in exercises to identify a character's central desire, explore the implicit and explicit stakes associated with that desire, and use that desire as a tool of craft. Through interactive free-writing activities and small group discussions, writers will develop a clearer understanding of how a character's desires inform plot movement, central conflict, and dialogue.

Individual Webinar: $39

AUGUST 26, 2021: CHARACTER MATTERS WITH SHEREE L. GREER

There are characters we love and characters we love to hate. To love or hate a character, we have to be invested in the character; we have to know them to have feelings about them. In this workshop, writers will explore what it takes to craft compelling, complex characters who come alive on the page. With in-session writing prompts and small group exercises, writers will take a deep dive into their characters, learning what makes them tick, what makes them sick, and what makes them smile. You'll get to know your characters from the inside-out, giving you the flexibility, the compassion, and the patience to see them through the personal journey or exciting adventure that is your novel or short story.

Individual Webinar: $39

Let's explore revision as craft and discuss approaches that support the dynamic and rigorous work of sculpting our work from first draft to final form.

Character Matters: Crafting Compelling Characters

There are characters we love and characters we love to hate. To love or hate a character, we have to be invested in the character; we have to know them to have feelings about them. In this workshop, writers will explore what it takes to craft compelling, complex characters who come alive on the page. With in-session writing prompts and small group exercises, writers will take a deep dive into their characters to discover how their quirks, desires, and backgrounds inform a story's plots, themes, and structure.
